Empowering Young Visual Artists Through Entrepreneurship Project

Welcome to the first edition of our newsletter! We are excited to share the progress and achievements of our initiative to empower young visual artists through entrepreneurship. At the end of each month, we will be publishing a new edition of this newsletter aimed at keeping you updated on the activities we are undertaking. Here are the highlights:

Entrepreneurship Training for Emerging Artists

On May 9, 2024, we conducted a training program at the Global Platform in Lusaka, in collaboration with the Ministry of Sport, Youth, and Arts and the National Arts Council. We partnered with ZANACO Bank, which conducted the financial literacy session, providing artists with valuable insights into financial management. Prisca Sikana led the session on effective pricing strategies, and Chrispin Sinyangwe from Thrive Africa Initiative handled branding and marketing. The training, attended by 10 talented artists, equipped them with practical skills and knowledge, enhancing their pricing competency, financial literacy, and personal branding. Participants expressed their gratitude for the new strategies and financial management skills they acquired. Future plans include additional training sessions and continuous support for the participating artists.

Webinar: Essential Entrepreneurial Skills for Artists

On May 31, 2024, we hosted a comprehensive webinar on Google Meets, aimed at bridging the gap between art and business. We partnered with ZANACO Bank to conduct the financial management session, enhancing participants' financial literacy. The webinar also featured the Marketing Manager of Intercontinental Hotel, who led an insightful session on branding and marketing. Additionally, Vincent Chiwale, an artist who mentors young youths under the Thrive Africa Initiative, shared his expertise on pricing strategies, bringing a real-world perspective to the discussion. This event positively impacted 40 emerging artists, equipping them with essential skills in marketing, financial management, and pricing strategies. Participants expressed their newfound confidence in building their brands, setting prices, and managing finances. Future plans include ongoing mentorship, expanded webinar topics, and networking opportunities for artists.

Zambia @ 60 Art Exhibit: A Young Artist's Perspective

On June 26, 2024, we celebrated six decades of Zambian independence with the "Zambia @ 60 Art Exhibit" at the Henry Tayali Arts Gallery in Lusaka. The event featured powerful speeches, captivating performances, and extraordinary talent. Dignitaries included representatives from the Russian Centre and the Ministry of Sport, Youth and Arts. Mr Masinja Mweemba, Principal Arts Development Officer, read the speech on behalf of the Permanent Secretary of Arts. The performances by musicians Mufrika and Nice M, as well as representatives from Circus Zambia, added vibrant energy to the exhibit. 10 young visual artists showcased their exceptional works depicting Zambia’s 60th celebration from a young visual artist’s eyes. The event received extensive media coverage and highlighted the potential of young artists to contribute significantly to Zambia's cultural and economic development.

Upcoming Initiatives

We are excited to announce a series of webinars under "Empowering Young Visual Artists Through Entrepreneurship (Phase 2)" designed to enhance professional skills. Topics include Advanced Business Management, which covers strategic planning and leadership; Effective Marketing and Branding Strategies, focusing on digital marketing and personal branding; and Financial Management and Mental Health, addressing budgeting and financial stress. Additional sessions will cover Building Professional Networks, Legal Aspects and Intellectual Property Rights, Sustainable Practices and Environmental Impact, and Registration and Regulations for Visual Artists. These webinars aim to support artists' professional growth and success.

We are also collaborating with various art galleries to present blended art exhibits that feature visual, performing, and literary arts all under one roof. This initiative aims to showcase diverse art forms and foster a vibrant artistic community.

Shepard Fairey The Artist Behind Obey Giant
  • A fun fact about Fairey is that his career began with a simple sticker he designed while at the Rhode Island School of Design in 1989, featuring the face of professional wrestler André the Giant. The sticker started as an inside joke but quickly evolved into a viral street art campaign. His innovative use of branding and visual art not only propelled his career but also highlighted the potential of art to influence public opinion and political campaigns. Today, Fairey’s work extends beyond art galleries and streets; he has founded a successful design studio, Studio Number One, and continues to make a significant impact in both the art world and commercial design.
